Maintaining Your Home’s Welded Handrails

Adding a touch of custom metalworking to your home’s design can be a great way to add a distinctive look and feel to your surroundings. Metal handrails can be used indoors or out, but they are more common outdoors, where they can complement and contrast other decking materials.

Installation

One thing to keep in mind when getting custom work done is that you will need a skilled trade worker with the proper certifications. In this case, a certified welder will need to come in and do the work to install your handrail. This is important to note for maintenance purposes because you will also need that skilled help if there is ever a repair or maintenance concern, like corrosion or storm damage.

Environmental Concerns

Outdoor metal handrails are prone to the same issues and concerns that other metal installations like sculptures face, and in addition to that, the heat required for welding will remove the galvanization from steel used in the construction of your rails. This can be solved by either using a paint or other protective coating on the finished product to add color while preventing damage. It can also be averted entirely by using materials that are less prone to environmental corrosion, such as:

  • Bronze
  • Brass
  • Aluminum

Keep in mind, though, that ‘less prone’ to corrosion does not mean that these materials are invulnerable. Regular cleanings, as well as the use of protective over coating will be necessary in environments prone to urban pollution, acid rains, and other issues.
